Sleeving shovel cylinders

#1

Post by Lukaski »

Guys,
I need your help.
I am in progress with rebuilding shovel motor 97''.
Axtell cylinders and pistons. Bore size is 3 13/16.
Cylinders are badly corroded so I need bigger pistons. These I cannot get anymore so want to use existing ones and sleeve both jugs.
That will be tricky job as the cylinders have machined cuts for bolts and I can easily see daylight when machine too deep.
My question is what is the minimum thickness for repair sleeve wall? Is 0.060'' enough?
Anoter option is sleeving for 3 5/8. That size is common in use. Problem is that whole setup must be changed: crank balanced, cams change for different compression etc. and I just want to avoid this.
Thanks in advance
Lukas

A member that knew much about this topic stated .070 minimum thickness was his personal limit on a bore job:
