Retrofitting Turn Signals on 62 Duoglide

#1

Post by DeltaElite »

To get my 1962 DuoGlide registered I have to retrofit turn signals front and rear. The bike has been converted to 12v already so I got myself a 2pin flasher instead of 3-terminal 6V Flasher.

I checked my Service Manual & PartsCatalog. But I couldn't find any information concerning:

1) color-coding of wires for front turn-signals
2) color-coding of wires for rear turn-signals
3) routing of rear turn-signal cable
4) clamps and positions used for 3)
5) routing of front turn-signal cable
6) clamps and positions used for 5)
7) I have a flasher & bracket-kit with rivet. But where to put the flasher?
8) original position of turn-signal-switch on the handlebar?

Maybe there is some Bulletin for retrofitting turn signals?

And a search of the Knowledge base is always good. Here is a Duo-Glide instruction sheet.

Wow, where did you hide that? 🤣 Thank you so much.

I must have overlooked it, when I checked the download section. I only looked into the service bulletins.

Is there a picture for page 1 where all the items that are on the list are shown?

In the link I originally posted above, you'll note the first sheet had the part number of the kit, 68550-65B. This number is found in the 58-68 parts catalog, and I believe the diagram in that book has all these parts listed. Granted, you will need to match up description of part on sheet to description of part on diagram...
Probably the same goes for the earlier kit Robbie posted.
Depends on if you intend to go with the early or later signal kit...
I think that's the best you'll be able to do.

Coming back to this topic with a question about the first picture:

It says "connectors" between the black-wired pigtails and the green/red-wired lamp harness.

Does anybody know what connectors where used from the factory? I couldn't find a part or partnumber.

I believe 62 and earlier used male bullet connectors on both ends of cable and rear turn lamps, and these were butted together with 70575-50 insulating connecting tube (2). And I believe
63 up used a scissor type connector which I do not know a part number for… but I think Old Dude has them.

Hi DeltaElite,

when I bought my 64 DuoGlode in Germany, the dealer told me the following:

Up to 1965, the large HDs only had an engine number, not a frame number. It was therefore complicated to find out the specific first registration year for a DuoGlide. For that reason, all DuoGlides were registered as 1958, i.e. the first year DuoGlides were on the market. In 1958, there was no general obligation yet to have indicators.
He said as my bike was registered as 58, if I wanted to build a barebone chopper, I could therefore ride it without indicators and be ok with the German laws. (I could also remove the indicators that were on but who does that....)

I don't know if he told me poppycock, but before fabbing something complicated, you could maybe explore that route ( unless you did already).

@OneHandDuo

Unfortunately the TÜV knows about the Engine#. Since it starts with 62FLH he will enter 1962 as first year and unfortunately from 1962 on you have to retrofit turn indicators.

HELP needed for mounting terminal plate

#14

Post by DeltaElite »

Today i found out that previous owner removed the terminal plate inside the nacelle and also used different wires (color and material)

So i will order a 62 DuoGlide wire harness and terminal plate but:

1) where has the terminal plate to be mounted inside the nacelle? Looks like mid (there are holes that could fit) but the only pictures i find for 1960 Duo shows the terminal plate on the left of nacelle.

2) which screws, washers and lockwashers for terminal plate. Partsbook doesn't show.

The only threads available inside nacelle are in the middle on the fork brackets (see markings in pic)
