Oil line tap

#1

Post by DaveAus »

My 45” is a big wet sumper and over the years I’ve tried 8000 things and I haven’t been able to fix it.

A few years ago I put a tap in the oil line and couldn’t have been happier. The only problem is it’s ugly and the lines weeps a little.

I wanted to keep the traditional steel oil lines and I put the tap in the middle of the line

Does anyone have any better looking options?

Thanks
Dave

Placed about 4 inches from the tank, it sits just above the rearhead under the seat

That looks lovely and is exactly what I'm after.

That ebay link has expired so I'll start hunting around

What is nice about this tap is the fact you'll just need to cut about an inch off the (buy a repop!) line and install the tap.
Easy-piecy..

And...no need to mention this...open the tap before kicking the old gal over..

Actually, that old motor will run hundreds of miles with the tap closed. the oil light will remind you to open it. The important thing is the reason it's there in the first place, so close it when you shut her down at the end of the day.... I have run one in the past, ans I know this is true....

Those compression taps are meant for soft copper, just how do you manage to compress the ferrule into the steel oil line to prevent leaks?

Put some sealer on it if in doubt, it is only gravity feed....
Or stacked rubber O-rings would work too. This 1930's technology ain't rocker surgery....

Found the tap on eBay but he doesn't ship outside the US, thats why I couldn't find it.

I've dropped him a line and said "pretty please"

He doesn't need to ship outside of the US. eBay has a process in place where he ships to a central eBay international shipping point, and they do the rest. You will still be subject to the customs and related fees on your end. I use it quite often with Harley parts that I offer on eBay. It's effortless for a seller....
Would it be possible to copy & print that picture of the valve and try to find one locally? Showing a picture to a store person is usually mo effective than trying to describe it....

How about a pic of one of these taps installed. I'd like to see it. Thanks!

That's very nice, and well done......
Tucked in tight, outta the way, but still highly visible for the rider.
Even looks like a period modification....
No reason not to do this if one has a sumping problem....

Napa Auto Parts in Canada has these and they are plentiful. Its a very common valve used in many applications. They are solid brass, not plated and you can polish it up beautifully. No problem sealing to steel lines, that is what they are made to do.
