Throw out bearing

#1

Post by nanonevol »

Should I throw out this bearing?
I got this style because I heard that the conical, more durable style won't fit in some kicker covers and mine looked like that kind of cover.
but I'm not sure. It came with the package deal for this Paugho 45".
ImageImage
The instruction say to drill my main shaft 1/2" deep with a 7/16" drill to fit an included bushing.
It would result in a closer fit for the pushrod but I've never heard of this being done.
And nervous about ruining my shaft.

nanonevo,
What shaft are you using and what is its current ID at kick start end?
What is OD of new bush?
What is ID of new bush?

Raytag reports current new 36-64 Andrews 208500 mainshaft (OEM=35040-50) at starter end ID = .419. (no bush)

OE version of above shaft at starter end ID = .394 (no bush but -39 release bearing)

More info here viewtopic.php?t=20731&start=30

I’m thinking if mainshaft soft enough to drill with “normal” tools, maybe too soft to use.
Do instructions mention using a lathe to drill shaft? Or do they suggest hand held drill motor?
One would have to question engineering capability of manufacturer if the latter.

Might need a custom bush, or modify bush you have to suit shaft you have.

But if shaft you have is sloppy on pushrod, you definitely need a bush with Torrington type release bearing.

Nifty,

I can confirm what Raytag says.

I have just opened the box of a brand new Andrews shaft #208500 for a transmission that I am building, and there’s only 1 bushing installed.

Now I have to get 1.

Thanks!
I confess i selected my main shaft on price. It is an unknown repro. The short one.
It is also .419" id. So even Andrews requires us to drill out our shafts?

The instructions merely say to drill it "being careful to maintain hole alignment." That's a laugh!
Also says to loctite the bushing if it is loose!
The bushing provided is 7/16" od near as I can measure but I have another that is slightly larger at .439".
Both have an id of .383. The larger one may come in handy.

I have a drill press and a carbide bit so I will have a go at it.
Wish I'd know this before I assembled. Live and learn.

Thanks for the Shop Dope links!

I wonder why the Triumphs and BSA's dont have a fancy throw out bearing on their clutch pushrods.

How does the OD of the TO bearing shaft compare to the ID of your transmission shaft?

George !
The OD of the bushings sold is way too big.
I got myselves 2 from w&W 77125 (steel) and they will never fit the Andrews mainshaft cause they bushings are made for the OEM shaft which has got a bigger internal diameter.
Here`s what I did:
I turned down a bronze round stock acc to ID of the Andrews shaft with slight oversize maybe .0006.
A solid piece . The same length like the bushings I received.
That solid round stock I pressed into the shaft.
Then I carefully centered the mainshaft in the chuck (with aluminum jaws) and drilled and reamed that bronze stock acc to the pushrod I have (mine is .374) with the tailstock. My reamer is for steel so I ballhoned it a lil afterwards

If you don`t have access to a lathe lemme know and send it to me incl the pushrod .
If you don`t want bronze SAE 660 ( C93200) I can offer some mild steel.

re I wonder why the Triumphs and BSA's dont have a fancy throw out bearing on their clutch pushrods.
IMO Apples & oranges, BT clutch torque and abuse resistance capability requires its heavy pushrod
IMO you would have been better off using a pre-unit Triumph gearbox with unit 5 speed guts, in your 45".
Making the bush fit your repop BT shaft would be how I would do it.
If I could only have one machine tool, it would be a lathe.
But that's just me

Bare in mind fellas, that bushing in the main shaft only supports the Torrington's stub shaft. It and the push rod spin with the MS, at the same speed, so all the bushing does is centers the TO bearing shaft and allow for in & out motion of the push rod. The Torrington must remain true and centered within the shaft and against the TO fork. If the stub shaft, and/or the push rod should rotate within the main shaft, that is mere coincidental, and not intended. Too much rotation of those parts indicates that the TO bearing is going away, or adjusted too tight. It does require free play, running clearance.....

Hey RooDog, I think you are confusing the 5 & 4 speeds :D
your 5speeds have the stub shaft
4 speeds only have the pushrod with torrington on end
Not being picky, just avoiding confusion
Everything else you said applies to nanonevol's predicament and is right on

Thanks, Nifty, that is where my head was at since I'm working on my clutch, from one end to the other, this week. I also remember when I first opened up a then new Super Glide, in like 1975, to find a pack of Ronson cigarette lighter flints between two two flat washers, and thinking, WTF?

Perfect description! Many found Ronson flints scattered in case.
The young 'uns don't know what Ronsons, cigarette lighters and flints are
